Plain Language Recommendations

Tables should be used for tabular data only. Data table captions and summaries must be used where appropriate. Table must be marked up in one of three ways:

  1. For simple tables that have the headers in the first row or column, use the <TH> tag.
  2. For more complex tables, use the “scope” attribute in the <TH> elements and <TD> elements acting as headers (value of row, col, rowgroup, or colgroup).
  3. For very complex tables (where a data cell has more than one row and/or header), use “id” and “headers” attributes appropriately.

Create content that can be presented in different ways (for example simpler layout) without losing information or structure.
