Non-text content (1.1.1 – A)

Plain Language Recommendations

All non-text content must have appropriate, equivalent alternative text.

  • ASCII Art, emoticons
  • Charts, diagrams
  • Audio recordings
  • Animations

If a long description is required, longdesc must NOT be used. An alternate page must be created and linked adjacent to the content.

Examples

  1. An image is used as a submit button: to meet this standard, include text as well as an image in the link OR use an alt attribute in the image tag to describe what the button will do.

WCAG 2.0 Recommendations

Guideline 1.1: Text Alternatives

Provide text alternatives for any non-text content so that it can be changed into other forms people need, such as large print, braille, speech, symbols or simpler language.
