Plain Language Recommendations

All images must have appropriate, equivalent alternative text.
The alt attribute must be used for short descriptions. If a long description is required (i.e., complex images), longdesc must NOT be used. An alternate page must be created and linked adjacent to the image.

Examples

  1. An infographic is in jpg format. A text alternative is provided.

Notes

  1. The alt attribute has a length limit of 100 characters.

Guideline 1.1: Text Alternatives

Provide text alternatives for any non-text content so that it can be changed into other forms people need, such as large print, braille, speech, symbols or simpler language.
